  THE TOLTECS
A.D. 900-A.D. 1200

he Nahuat-speaking Toltecs founded their capital at Tula, about 40 miles northwest of what is today Mexico City. Two pyramids were built at this site. As their empire grew more powerful, the Toltecs decorated their buildings with large north-facing stone sculptures believed to represent warriors. Some of these served as supporting columns and are called “atlanteans.” The harsh, angular forms of Toltec art suggest ideals of warriorship.
